Weak Flow at One Tap? Check the Aerator Before You Call Anyone

The local water supply produces a specific symptom that reads exactly like a dying faucet. Five minutes and a cloth will tell you which one you have.

Why this test exists at all

There is a category of plumbing call that ends with the plumber unscrewing a small part from the end of your tap, rinsing it, screwing it back on, and charging you for a visit. Nobody enjoys that outcome, including the plumber, and it is entirely avoidable.

It happens often enough here that it is worth writing down, and the reason is specific to the water this city receives rather than to anything about your fixtures. Federal Way is supplied largely from groundwater wells, and groundwater in this region carries dissolved iron and manganese. The utility reports several of its sources running over the aesthetic threshold for both.

Neither stays in solution indefinitely. Both oxidise, drop out and accumulate quietly along the mains. Disturb those mains and the deposits lift back into the water, which is exactly why this complaint tends to arrive right after roadworks, a hydrant being run, or the utility flushing your neighbourhood.

What the aerator is and why it catches everything

The aerator is the small screened fitting at the tip of the spout. It mixes air into the stream, which is why water from a modern tap looks white and soft rather than glassy, and it shapes the flow so it does not splash.

It also has the finest mesh anywhere in your plumbing. Every particle that travels the whole way from the well to your kitchen arrives at that screen, and the screen is doing exactly what it was designed to do when it holds them back. A partially blocked aerator produces reduced flow, an uneven or spitting stream, and water that sprays sideways.

Every one of those symptoms is also what a worn cartridge produces. That is the whole problem. The cheapest possible fault and a genuine fixture failure present identically from the outside, and the only way to tell is to look.

Cleaned it and still weak?

The restriction sits upstream of the fixture. Call (253) 478-2671 and say which taps are affected and which are fine.

The test, step by step

Wrap a cloth around the tip of the spout to protect the finish, then unscrew the aerator. Most come out by hand. Stiff ones need pliers over the cloth, turning the way you would loosen any thread when looking down at it from above.

Put the plug in first. The assembly comes apart into two or three small pieces and at least one of them will make a run for the drain if you give it the chance.

Look at the screen. Fine dark grit, reddish brown particles, or a rusty film across the mesh is the iron and manganese sediment described above, and it is what you were hoping to find. White chalky crusting is scale, which is less common here given how soft the supply is, but not impossible on a very old fixture.

Rinse it under a strong stream from another tap, brush it gently with an old toothbrush if it needs it, reassemble in the same order it came apart, and screw it back on hand tight plus a nudge. Then run the tap.

Reading the result

Flow returns to normal. The faucet was never faulty and you have saved yourself a call out. Put a note in your calendar to check it again in six months, because if it filled once it will fill again.

Flow improves but is still poor. There is likely a second restriction, commonly the cartridge or the angle stop underneath, which may never have been opened fully after some previous work.

No change at all. The restriction is upstream of the fixture and the aerator was a red herring. That is still a useful result because it eliminates the cheapest explanation definitively.

The screen was clean to begin with. Same conclusion, and worth mentioning when you call, because it narrows the search before anyone arrives.

The question that changes everything: how many taps?

This is the single most useful piece of information you can collect, and almost nobody volunteers it unprompted.

One tap affected while everything else in the house behaves normally means the fault is at or very near that fixture. Aerator, cartridge, or the shutoff valve under it. Small, local, cheap.

Several taps affected together means the fault is upstream of all of them and the fixtures are innocent. That could be a partially closed valve somewhere, a pressure regulator failing, or a restriction in the supply pipe itself.

Every tap in the house affected, particularly if it has come on gradually over years rather than suddenly, points at the supply pipe narrowing internally. In older housing that means galvanized steel corroding from the inside, and it is the classic signature of a system approaching the end of its life. That is a repiping conversation rather than a fixture one, and it is worth knowing which of the two you are in before spending anything.

Hot side only, across multiple taps, is a fourth pattern and it usually points at the water heater rather than at the supply or the fixtures.

While you have the cabinet open

If you do end up doing work under a sink, or having it done, two things are worth attending to at the same time because they are cheap now and expensive later.

The shutoff valves. Under sinks in houses of this age, the angle stops have usually never been moved since the day they went in. Ask one to close after three decades of stillness and it may simply refuse, or worse, weep afterwards, and a five minute job becomes an unplanned shutdown of the whole house. Swapping them out during work you had already booked costs almost nothing.

The supply connectors. Braided stainless flexible connectors have a service life and they fail suddenly rather than gradually. A burst connector under a sink in a house built over a crawl space can run for a long time before anyone notices, and that is one of the more common routes to a genuine water damage claim in this city.

Neither of those is glamorous and both are the kind of thing a good plumber will mention while they are already there. It is worth saying yes.

When it is not worth doing yourself

If the aerator will not come off with reasonable force, stop. Some are threaded internally and need a specific key, and a spout damaged by pliers is a considerably worse outcome than a slow tap.

If the fixture is old, unbranded and builder grade, cleaning the aerator may work and the cartridge behind it may be unobtainable. That is a genuine argument for replacement rather than a sales pitch, and it is covered on our faucet repair page.

And if any part of this reveals water where water should not be, deal with that first. A damp cabinet floor is a different problem from a weak tap and it does not wait politely while you sort out the flow.
