The Four Numbers to Get Before Anyone Quotes You a Water System
Water treatment is sold on demonstrations and bought on impressions. These four measurements turn it into a decision you can actually check.
Why demonstrations persuade and measurements decide
There is a well established sales approach for home water treatment that involves an in home demonstration producing a dramatic visual result. Water goes cloudy, something precipitates, a colour changes, and a system is recommended on the spot.
Most of those demonstrations are chemically real. What they usually are not is diagnostic, because a reaction that proves something is present in your water says nothing about how much of it is present, whether that quantity matters, or whether the equipment being recommended addresses it.
The defence is not scepticism about the industry, which does genuinely useful work. It is insisting on numbers. Four measurements answer the entire question for a house in this region, they are cheap to obtain, and they turn a persuasive afternoon into an arithmetic problem you can take away and think about.
Number one: total hardness, in grains per gallon
Hardness is the concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium, and it is the only thing a water softener actually removes. Everything a softener is sold to fix traces back to this one figure.
It gets reported two ways, which causes endless confusion. Parts per million, sometimes written as milligrams per litre, and grains per gallon. One grain per gallon is roughly seventeen parts per million, so a result of a hundred and seventy parts per million is about ten grains.
The rough bands used across the industry put anything under about three and a half grains in the soft category, three and a half to seven as moderate, seven to ten and a half as hard, and above that very hard.
Here is the part that matters locally. Independent measurements of the supply serving Federal Way put it at the soft to slightly hard end of that scale, comfortably below the level where scale accumulation damages a water heater or blocks an aerator. If your own test comes back in that range and somebody is recommending a softener, ask them what problem it solves. There is occasionally a good answer. Numbers two and three: iron and manganese
These are the two that actually explain most water complaints in this city, and they are measured separately from hardness because they are removed by different equipment.
Both occur naturally in groundwater across this region, and the utility has flagged several of its sources as exceeding the secondary standard for them. Secondary standards cover appearance, taste and odour rather than health, which is why this is an aesthetic and appliance question rather than a safety one.
What they produce at home is recognisable once you know to look for it. Iron gives reddish brown staining in basins, on laundry and around fixtures, and a metallic taste. Manganese gives darker, blacker staining and a sooty deposit that turns up in aerators and in the bottom of kettles.
The important point for a buyer is that a softener is not the right equipment for either at meaningful concentrations. Iron and manganese removal generally needs oxidising filtration sized to the measured level. Being sold a softener for a staining complaint is the single most common mismatch we hear about locally, and it happens because the salesperson has applied a playbook written for a hard water state.
Number four: pH, and why it comes last but is not optional
pH matters for two practical reasons rather than for anything you will taste.
First, it determines whether iron and manganese filtration will work. Oxidising media need the water to sit within a workable range, and a system installed without checking this underperforms in a way that is difficult to diagnose after the fact. Any competent proposal for iron removal should reference the pH.
Second, sitting at the acidic end of the range makes water harder on certain pipe materials across decades. That is worth knowing in an older house, because it interacts with whatever the supply lines are made of and it is one input into a repiping conversation rather than a treatment one.
It is a cheap addition to any test and it stops you buying filtration that cannot do its job in your particular water.
How to get the numbers
Start with the utility's annual water quality report, which is published and free. That gives you the system wide picture including which sources serve your area and what has been found in them. It is a genuinely useful document and almost nobody reads it.
Its limitation is that it reports on the system rather than on your tap. Blends vary by location and by time of year, and anything happening between the main and your fixture, including your own pipework, does not appear in it.
So follow it with a test at your own tap. Home test strips give a broad range and are fine for confirming that you are roughly where the utility says you are. A drop titration kit gives a more useful hardness figure. And a mail in laboratory test gives you all four numbers properly, which is what you want before spending on equipment.
One practical note. Sample from a cold tap that has been running for a minute, not from a hot tap and not from the first water out of a fitting that has stood overnight. Both of those produce results that describe your plumbing rather than your supply.
What to do with the results
Hardness genuinely high: a softener is the correct equipment and it will do what it says. Uncommon here, but not impossible, and a measurement is what tells you.
Iron or manganese elevated with hardness low: filtration selected and sized for those metals, with the pH checked. This is the common local outcome.
Taste or smell of chlorine with everything else unremarkable: carbon filtration, which is inexpensive and can be point of use rather than whole house if it is only about drinking water.
A rotten egg smell on hot water only, with cold water clean: this is not a supply problem at all. The reaction is happening at the anode rod inside your water heater, and swapping that rod is a fraction of the cost of any treatment system. It is covered on the heater repair page.
And all four numbers unremarkable: buy nothing. That is a legitimate outcome and it is the one a fair proportion of households in this city should reach. A test that saves you from an unnecessary purchase has paid for itself many times over.

A test costs very little and decides a much larger spend. Sometimes it decides against spending at all.
