What high pressure water actually does

A jetter sends water down the line at high pressure through a nozzle that fires most of its jets backward. Those rear facing jets do two things at once: they propel the hose up the pipe against the flow, and they scour the full internal circumference on the way back out.

The result is different in kind from a cable. A cable is a mechanical tool that cuts a passage through whatever is in the way, and it is very good at that. What it leaves behind is the grease coating on the pipe wall and the root stubs at the joint, because it only removed what was directly in its path.

Jetting takes the wall back toward bare pipe. For a kitchen line that has been narrowing with congealed fat for fifteen years, that is the difference between restoring the original diameter and drilling a temporary channel through the middle of the deposit.

The camera comes first, and this is not a formality

Jetting a sound line is safe. Jetting a line that is already cracked, badly corroded or offset can turn a manageable defect into a collapse, and that is a genuinely worse outcome than the blockage you started with.

Given the age profile here, with a median build year around 1984 and older stock in pockets, a line's condition is not something to assume. A camera run before jetting establishes whether the pipe can take it and, just as usefully, whether jetting will even solve the problem.

Any contractor willing to jet an unknown line without looking at it first is skipping the step that protects you rather than the step that protects them. It is a fair thing to insist on.

The two jobs it is genuinely best at here

Kitchen grease lines are the first. Fat leaves the sink warm and liquid, cools within a short run of pipe, and lays down a little more coating with every wash up. Years of that produces a line that is technically flowing and functionally half its original bore. Jetting is the only method that restores it properly.

Root mats are the second, and this is where local conditions matter. Federal Way's neighborhoods were built into standing second growth timber with a great many firs and cedars left in place, sitting directly over side sewers laid in the seventies and eighties. Roots enter at weeping joints and build into a mat that catches solids. A cable cuts a channel through the mat. A jetter with a root cutting nozzle removes considerably more of it, which is why the interval before it returns is longer.

Longer, not permanent. Jetting removes what has grown, and it does not close the gap the roots came in through. Where a camera shows the pipe still has good structure, planned jetting on a schedule is a legitimate way to manage a line while you budget for a permanent repair.

When it is the wrong tool

It is the wrong tool on a belly. If the camera shows standing water that does not clear as the head moves through, the line has lost its fall, and no amount of cleaning changes grade. Jetting a belly gives you a clean pipe that fills up again immediately.

It is the wrong tool on a failing pipe, for the reasons above. It is the wrong tool for a simple hair clog in a bathroom branch, where a cable or even a hand auger does the job in minutes for a fraction of the cost. And it is the wrong tool when the honest answer is that the line needs replacing and jetting is being sold as a way to postpone that conversation.

We would rather tell you a jetting visit will not help than take the booking. A cleaning that does not last is not a cheap outcome for anybody.

Before and after a jetting visit

Jetting sits in the middle of a sequence. It follows a camera inspection that confirms the pipe can take it, and where the same line keeps closing up it eventually gives way to repair or replacement. For an ordinary single fixture blockage, straightforward drain cleaning is the cheaper and entirely adequate answer.
