Cold Water, Not Hot, and Four Other Disposal Rules
The advice most people follow makes the problem worse. Here is what the appliance is actually doing to the pipe behind it, and what to do about it.
The rule everyone gets backwards
Ask around and most people will tell you to run hot water while the disposal is going, on the reasoning that hot water helps things flow and keeps the pipe clear. It is intuitive, it is nearly universal, and it is the opposite of what you want.
Fats and cooking oils are solid or semi solid at cold temperatures. Run cold water while grinding and any fat present stays firm, gets chopped up with everything else, and travels out of the house as small particles carried along by the flow.
Run hot water and the same fat melts. It leaves the disposal chamber as a liquid, travels a short distance along the drain line, meets cooler pipe, and solidifies against the wall where you cannot see it. You have not removed it from the system. You have relocated it to somewhere less convenient and set it there.
So: cold water, and keep it running for a good while after the noise stops. That last part matters as much as the temperature, because the grinding takes seconds and moving the results through the horizontal run takes considerably longer.
What the disposal is doing to the pipe behind it
This is the part that costs money, and almost nobody thinks about it because the appliance keeps working perfectly well while it happens.
The unit reduces food to something small enough to wash away, and it is a reasonable assumption that washing away means gone. It does not. What has happened is that food solids have entered a nearly level pipe at walking pace, alongside whatever grease came off the dishes, and are now working their way along a run that is steadily cooling them.
Fine particles stick to any fat already coating the wall. More fat sticks to the particles. Over a decade the internal diameter narrows steadily, and the line reaches a point where it is technically flowing but has very little margin left. Then one ordinary bowl of rice finishes it.
That mechanism is behind a substantial share of the kitchen blockages we clear in this city, and it is why a house where a disposal has been used heavily for years has a kitchen line worth thinking about even while everything seems fine.

The other four rules
Grease and cooking fat never go in, disposal or not. Pour it into an old jar or a tin, let it set, and put it in the bin. This is dull advice and it is genuinely the highest value sentence on this page.
Fibrous material wraps rather than cuts. Celery strings, artichoke leaves, corn husks and onion skins wind around the impellers and around each other, and the result is a jam rather than a grind.
Starchy volume expands and pastes. Pasta, rice and potato peel absorb water and form something with the consistency of wallpaper paste, which is extremely good at coating the inside of a pipe. A small amount is fine. A drained pot of spaghetti is not.
Coffee grounds settle rather than travel. They do not stick to anything and they are not greasy, but they are dense and they accumulate in any low point in the run, which over time is its own kind of blockage.
And nothing harder than the machine. Bones, fruit stones and cutlery that fell in are all arguments the disposal loses eventually even if it seems to win at the time.
Is it worth having one at all?
This is a fair question and the honest answer is that it depends on how the household actually cooks rather than on any general principle.
The case for keeping it is convenience and the reduction in wet food waste going into a bin indoors. That is a real quality of life benefit and it is why they are near universal in kitchens here.
The case against is the pipe. A household that composts, scrapes plates properly into the bin before washing, and uses the disposal only for what escapes the scraping is putting very little into the drain line and will likely never have a problem. A household that treats it as a second bin is building a blockage on a schedule.
So the real answer is not whether to have one. It is whether the household treats it as a convenience for incidental scraps or as a disposal route for food waste. Those two behaviours produce completely different outcomes from identical appliances, and the difference shows up as kitchen line blockages a decade later.
When the sink is slow and the unit is fine
This is the most common diagnostic confusion around disposals and it costs people money regularly.
Where the unit grinds normally and sounds healthy but the basin above it still empties slowly, the appliance has been wrongly accused. Whatever is restricting flow sits further along the pipe, and it is nearly always the build up described earlier rather than any single object lodged in the way.
Replacing the disposal in that situation changes nothing at all, and it is a purchase people make with genuine confidence because the slow sink appeared around the same time the unit started sounding older. The two are unrelated.
What actually resolves it is cleaning the line properly, and because the deposit is on the wall rather than in the middle, that usually means jetting rather than cabling. A cable bores through the coating and leaves it in place. High pressure water takes the bore back toward what it was.
The three faults, and which you can handle
Humming without turning is a jam. Switch it off at the wall and stop flipping the switch, because a motor drawing current without moving is a motor heading toward failure. Most units have a hex socket underneath and come with a key that lets you free the plate by hand. There is a reset button on the base that usually needs pressing afterwards.
Completely silent is electrical rather than mechanical. Reset button first, then the breaker, then the switch. If all three check out, the motor has gone and the unit is a replacement.
A leak depends entirely on where the water is coming from. Up at the collar where the unit meets the sink is a matter of pulling it down and bedding it again. Around the dishwasher spigot or the outlet elbow is a joint. And weeping from the shell itself means rust has gone through the casing, at which point nothing can be done for it. Do not replace the wrong thing
A slow sink behind a working disposal is a pipe question. We would rather tell you that than sell you a unit.
